SECRET EXTRACTION
TECHNIQUES

FERMENTATION

FERMENTATION

Fermentation is an ancient technique that uses micro-organisms such as bacteria and fungi to naturally transform food (yoghurt, cheese, kombucha, beer, wine, bread). This method has been practiced for thousands of years by every culture; enhancing flavors, changing the molecules of organisms, and extending shelf life. The fermentation process was first described by alchemists in the “Nigredo" (or black) phase, and has ever since grown into a timeless and borderless tradition all over the world.

HYDRO-DISTILATION

HYDRO-DISTILATION

Hydro distillation is an ancient extraction method that relies on the properties of water and steam to extract essential oils and other aromatic compounds from certain plants & herbs. By immersing plant materials in water and applying heat, the process gently releases the natural essences. Practiced for centuries, hydro-distillation remains a cornerstone in the production of perfumes, natural remedies, and wellness products. This time consuming process requires an abundance of botanicals to result in the intense Opius flavour profiles.

SOLVENT EXTRACTION

SOLVENT EXTRACTION

"Solvent extraction" is a process which consists of separating certain components of a mixture using a solvent. The solvent is chosen according to its capacity to selectively dissolve specific substances while leaving other components intact. Once the target substances are dissolved in the solvent, they can then be collected through evaporation or other separation methods. This method, first described by alchemists in the early ages, takes up to 4 weeks for every Opius batch.

TINCTURES

TINCTURES

Tinctures are an other alchemical practice first described by alchemists in the "Magnum Opus". This technique was used for centuries to extract essential oils and active compounds from botanicals. Tinctures are mostly used in the world of "perfumery", and is rooted in ancient wisdom which believed it to capture the “spirit” of the plant. In ancient Egypt these techniques were used to create life enhancing & potent herbal remedies. These reflected the harmony between nature and men.

FAQ

What about Gluten? Lactose? Allergens?

+

The Opius products don't contain Gluten or Lactose. All our elixirs are vegan-proof, we only use ingredients from non-animal origin. Opius Amaro contains "almond nut" , and is therefore not appropriate for people with nut allergy. Opius Nigredo, Albedo, and Rubedo may only contain "traces of nuts".

Are Opius products organic (BIO)?

+
  • Opius is crafted with 100% natural botanicals and herbs, with no artificial flavour enhancers and no added colourings.
  • That said, we are NOT "bio/organic" certified. Why? Our recipes use a wide spectrum of botanicals, and not all of them are consistently available in certified-organic quality or traceable under the certification rules across every harvest and origin. In addition, we use small amounts of permitted food-grade acidity regulators to ensure stability and shelf life.

Can i get drunk from drinking Opius?

+

Opius will not make you drunk, our elixirs are designed to give you the feeling of relaxation and increased sociability - similar to having 1 or 2 drinks. However, our elixirs are purely botanical, and made from all-natural ingredients to enhance your brain's naturally occurring GABA.

* Delivery & shipping information

+

8$ shipping fee applies on all orders — with +/- 3-4 day delivery time.

How do i store Opius?

+

Keep our bottles in your backbar, shelf or closet at room temperature. Preferably in a dry place, away from sunlight.

How long can i keep my Opius bottle?

+

Once opened our elixirs stay good for (at least) 6 months. However, please check the expiry date on the back of our bottles.
Note: this date is only an indication... we urge you to use your eyes and nose.

Is your product truly alcohol-free, as in 0,00%?

+

Yes, unlike some companies that sell non-alcoholic products that actually still contain alcohol — around 0.5% — Opius is 0,00% ABV. We are not an "alcohol removed" spirit. Our recipes were especially created by Master Distiller, Prof Dr. SAS, from the ground up. For that he used secret techniques found in long forgotten alchemical archives.

I'm pregnant. Is this safe for me to drink?

+

Our products are alcohol free, and already enjoyed by many pregnant women. But if you have any doubts given your unique health circumstances, we always suggest that you consult your doctor to be sure. Please contact us for more information: info@opius.be.

Is it normal for Opius to have sediment or clumps?

+

Yes, sediment in the Opius elixirs is completely normal. This occurs due to the high amount of natural herbs & botanicals used in our process. We only filter once to preserve as much flavor as possible.

Clumping happens faster in cold environments, which is why we recommend storing the bottles at room temperature in the backbar (although refrigeration won’t harm the product). Simply give the bottle a good shake to dissolve any sediment or clumps.

Is Opius a "non-alcoholic spirit"?

+

Yes - and no! Although it can be used as a spirit replacement, Opius is fundamentally different in its nature. Unlike most other NA products, we're not a “spirit”, but an "aroma" or "elixir" that can be added to drinks & food.

Why does it matter? Because of the way we're made... our Master Distiller, Prof. Dr. Sas, invented a unique combination of complex techniques. Did you know it takes up to 4 weeks to finish 400 bottles of Opius (= 1 batch).

What is a 'social elixir'? What is "GABA"?

+

GABA (or gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a compound found in nearly all life on earth. In our brains, "GABA" is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate the nervous system by calming neural activity, helping to reduce stress, anxiety, and promote sleep. Therefore, GABA is often associated with feelings of calmness and well-being. Although Opius does not contain any GABA, some of our ingredients support its natural production... Feel sociable, without any next-day regrets!

What is the volume of your bottles?

+

Our standard bottles are 500ml.
The small bottles are 200ml.

What about calories? Does Opius contain sugar?

+

Opius elixirs contain natural sugars to enhance the depth, body, and balance of our non-alcoholic cocktails—just like traditional spirits. Instead of artificial sweeteners, we use ingredients like sugar beet molasses, which provide a rich, natural sweetness that complements our carefully selected botanicals. This ensures that every sip delivers a full, satisfying experience without alcohol. While our elixirs do contain some calories, they are crafted to bring complexity and character to your drinks, making them a true alternative to conventional spirits. Nigredo: 37 kcal / 100mlAlbedo: 40 kcal / 100mlAmaro: 16 kcal / 100mlRubedo: 50 kcal / 100ml

Why is Opius more expensive than other (non-)alcoholic drinks or spirits?

+
  • Opius is a true premium product — not as a marketing gimmick, but because of the incredibly labor-intensive and artisanal process behind each bottle.
  • Unlike traditional (alcoholic) spirits, which are often produced at scale using relatively straightforward techniques, Opius requires far more time, effort, and ingredients to achieve the same level of depth and complexity without relying on alcohol to carry flavor.
  • Every single bottle is handcrafted by Professor Dr. Sas, a true master distiller who is obsessed with our delicate and complex process. It takes over four weeks of focused hands-on work to create just 400 bottles.
  • We use a combination of advanced methods such as fermentationhydro-distillationtinctures, and long maceration, along with a vast quantity of herbs, spices, and botanicals. Because there's no alcohol to amplify flavor, we must use significantly more natural ingredients to achieve the same intensity.
  • In fact, Opius has more in common with a perfume than with a traditional spirit. Our process is inspired by a blend of ancient alchemy and modern science rooted in the world of perfumery, where layering, extraction, and molecular precision are key to building complexity and sensorial impact. The techniques we use are traditionally kept secret, passed down through experience and intuition, rather than scaled through automation.
  • This naturally results in a higher cost, but we'll always stay true to our core mission: an uncompromising focus on flavor, intensity, craftsmanship, and sensory experience.
  • For those seeking a truly refined, flavor-forward, alcohol-free alternative, Opius is a craft elixir unlike any other — and we know it’s worth every drop.
